If a domain registration is not paid before or on the due date, the bill item will expire, and the services on the domain will be suspended. Here, we explain the lifecycle of a domain after it passes its renewal date.

CAUTION: Once the registration expires, Tucows may, at its discretion, elect to assume the registration and may hold it in its own account, delete it, or sell it to a third party.

Once a domain expires, it enters the Expiration Grace Period for 39 days
- During this time we can renew the domain at no additional cost to you
IMPORTANT: During the Grace Period, the domain will be listed as expired and may be listed for auction by OpenSRS. The domain name will be removed from the auction when you renew the registration.
CAUTION: Once 40 days have passed, the domain can be auctioned off to a third party as early as 40 days past the renewal date. If the domain is not renewed within 40 days and a third party purchases it, you will lose the domain and no longer be able to renew it.

After that period, it goes into the Redemption Period for another 30-35 days

IMPORTANT: During the Redemption Period, if the domain name is queued for live auction, it can no longer be redeemed by the original registrant. Live auction typically occurs between days 40 to 45.

After the Redemption Period, the domain is Pending Deletion for approximately 5 days
- During this time the domain cannot be redeemed or changed in any way

Finally, the domain reaches its Deletion Date anywhere from day 60-90
