Connect via FTP

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a common and robust method for uploading large files and directories to the server. This guide shows how to connect to FTP using FileZilla, a popular free FTP software client; however, the information generally applies to all FTP clients.

Connecting via FTP

IMPORTANT: You need to download and install the FileZilla client before using FileZilla.  Ensure you use the FileZilla Client and not the FileZilla Server.

1. Open your FileZilla program
2. Enter your FTP credentials into the Quickconnect bar at the top
   
   NOTE: The easiest way to connect via FTP is to use the FileZilla Quickconnect feature.
   
   1. To connect with the cPanel username
      
      1. Hostname: the Hostname found in your Account Technical Details
      2. Username: your cPanel username
      3. Password: your cPanel password
         TIP: If you do not know this password, you can reset it in AMP.
      4. Port: 21
   2. To connect using an FTP User Account created in the cPanel User Manager
      1. Hostname: the Hostname found in your Account Technical Details
      2. Username: The username created, and as shown, in the cPanel User Manager tool
         TIP: New FTP users can be created in cPanel > FTP Accounts.
         NOTE: This user is formatted like an email address. So, if you created ftpuser@domain.com your full username will be ftpuser@domain.com.
         IMPORTANT: The username is case-sensitive, so FTPUser@domain.com and ftpuser@domain.com will connect as different users.
      3. Password: The same as the FTP user password entered upon account creation.
         TIP: The FTP account password can be reset in cPanel.
      4. Port: 21
3. Click the Quickconnect button to sign in to your FTP account
4. If upon logging in, you see an error message like any of the following below, then you'll need to double-check the Hostname, Username, Password, and Port number
   
   

   Failure: Response:  530 Login incorrect. Error:  Critical error Error:  Could not connect to server

   NOTE: While uncommon, it is possible that your Internet Service Provider, ISP, may be blocking access to port 21, the FTP port. We do not block access to these services on our hosting plans by default. If you have a VPS or dedicated server with us, these ports are open unless we have been asked to close them or move FTP to another port.  For our shared hosting plans, port 21 is always open.
